Drivers had a pleasant surprise Friday afternoon — gas at $1.99 per gallon.
The Marathon gas station at the intersection of Ind. 1 and Ind. 124 in Bluffton sold gas at a discount between 3-5 p.m. to advertise a charity drive. During the same time, gas at neighboring gas stations was priced around $2.89.
The line for gas nearly spilled into the street for the Penny Pitch drive, a yearly fundraiser hosted by WOWO radio out of Fort Wayne for Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana. Junior Achievement is a nonprofit that seeks to prepare young people for career success. The radio station is looking to donate the money to support Junior Achievement’s Job Spark event, which last year brought around 6,000 kids to interact with potential career paths available in northeast Indiana.
The group hoped that, with the lower price, more people would stop by the building and participate in the fundraiser.
Josh Williams, the assistant program director for WOWO, along with representatives from Junior Achievement, expressed their excitement for every donation from the community and their passion to see the drive succeed.
Other gas stations in Columbia City and New Haven also raised money Friday afternoon.
