Betty Lorene (Shreck) Griffis died on Sept. 30, 2024, in Tucson, Arizona.
She was born on Aug. 25, 1923, in Scott, Ohio and grew up in Van Wert with her parents, two brothers, and a sister. After high school, and during WWII, Betty graduated from Lima Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. On Jan. 2, 1946, Betty married Lloyd just days after he returned from his wartime service as a pilot. In 1963, Betty and Lloyd and their three children, David, Beth, and Susie, moved to Bluffton. Betty was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. She was part of the Altar Guild and the Mission Society, and sang in the choir. Betty was a creative and competent cook, and a talented seamstress.
Betty continued her nursing profession by volunteering with the American Red Cross. She played golf with her friends in the Ladies Golf League and she was a sharp bridge player, eventually earning Life Master status. She was actively involved with the League of Women Voters.
Betty and Lloyd loved to travel. They visited many European countries, China, and most of the U.S. Eventually, they moved to Tucson, enjoying the weather and their Tucson family, David and Virginia, grandsons and great-grandsons.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, and her brothers, Morris and William Shreck, and an infant great-grandson, James. She is survived by her sister, Nanette Davies, and her children, David Griffis (Virginia), Elizabeth Deemer (Barry), and Susan Swenson (Andrew), six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life is planned for a future date. Memorials may be offered to The American Red Cross or the Tucson Medical Center Hospice.
