I can’t believe that school is about to start again. Make sure you squeeze in the last days of the pool this weekend before we close on Aug. 4 when our staff returns to work/school. If your family is still looking for places to cool off, the Splash Pads at Roush Park and Pickett’s Run will remain open through Labor Day.

We got some great news earlier this week when we learned that we had been awarded a grant from the Wells County Foundation to replace the canvas on two of our giant Funbrellas from the Community Enhancement Endowment Fund. The company we are purchasing them from was surprised to learn that they are over 16-years-old since they don’t usually have a lifespan that long. Fortunately, Kathy Gehrett has dedicated time each year to sew them back up, extending their usefulness. We are so thankful for the Wells County Foundation’s continued support and the shade these 20’ umbrellas provide to keep families safe during the hot summer days.
While we are being thankful, we want to be sure and thank the Bluffton-Harrison Metropolitan School District, which served 1,641 meals this summer! We love hosting this program at Roush Park, knowing that the kids who stop by get a nutritious meal while they enjoy our events. This has been an excellent partnership, and we appreciate all their hard work!
Mark your calendars for the next FREE Theater Thursday on Aug. 15; The Bluffton Parks and Recreation Department and Wells County Public Library have partnered to offer adults a free monthly movie. The Little Mermaid, Rated PG, will be shown at 10 a.m. at the Wells County Public Library. This year-round drop-in event is on the third Thursday of every month.
Touch a Truck — We’re excited to offer your child the chance to experience what big trucks are like from 9-noon on Saturday, Aug. 24, in the Washington Main Commons parking lot. We have so many vehicles planned this year that we will close Elm Street between Main and Johnson to get them all in. This year, we are trying something new by offering a sensory-sensitive hour from 9-10 a.m., where we ask participants to refrain from blowing the horns on the trucks. If your child enjoys the opportunity to toot the horn, plan to stop by after 10 am. This drop-in event is free and open to the public. An adult must accompany the children.
The Parks Department could use your help! If you are like me and you save your plastic grocery bags, please consider dropping them off in the white PVC tubes located in the parks and on the trails so pet owners can access empty bags to clean up after their dogs. As a reminder, these tubes are for clean, empty bags only. Pet owners who clean up after their dogs will need to properly dispose of those items in the nearest trash bins.
Have a great week!
