The Bluffton Optimist Club is hosting an event to help the community learn more about their volunteer work. President Steve Higgins said new members are needed to continue to provide positive growth to the community.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at the Bluffton branch of the Wells County Public Library in the small meeting room. Coffee and pie will be provided at no cost.

The mission of the overarching international organization is to provide hope and a positive vision, to bring out the best in youth, communities, and one another. There are groups in 28 countries, with approximately 64 clubs in Indiana. In 2023, the club donated funds to the Cub Scouts of America, the summer reading program at the local library, and the Miss Wells County pageant, among others. They also invested time and care into students by inviting them to showcase their talents or providing an essay contest geared towards positivity.

Higgins explained that the need for new members stems from the current members simply getting older or needing to tend to their health.

“We’re looking for folks that are interested in community service,” Higgins said. “We do a lot of youth programs in and around the community and provide funding for programs related to the library, the boys and girls club, cub scouts and more.”

All ages are welcome to participate, however, Higgins hopes a younger generation will get excited about joining the group. At 64 years old, Higgins is the youngest participant.

“Everyone is invited,” Higgins concluded. “We’d love to have you come join our fun-loving and service-minded group.

The group meets weekly at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays at Hoosier House in Bluffton. To learn more about Optimist International, interested parties may call 314-371-6000 or visit the organization’s website, optimist.org.
