Bertrand Russell is quoted as stating, “Change is indubitable, whereas progress is a matter of controversy.” Over the past couple of years, Wells County has had some controversy of its own, especially in matters of diversity and inclusion. From this, a group of concerned citizens initiated discussions about the pressing need for greater support and safe spaces for marginalized communities within the region. What began as mere conversations has since evolved into tangible action.
At the forefront of this movement were Haley Ashman and Kayla Holland, who established the Diversity and Inclusion Coalition, now known as Dive In. Starting as a social media page, Dive In has grown into a monthly gathering where community members unite to exchange knowledge, offer support, and advocate for equality.
Another individual, Carla Sue Castro, assisted local students to establish diversity and inclusion clubs at the Bluffton middle and high schools. As of this fall, these clubs will be meeting in the community to allow students from Norwell and Southern Wells school districts to join. The Above (middle school) and Beyond (high school) clubs focus on education, support, community service and advocacy.
Encouraged by their progress, Haley, Kayla, and Carla Sue joined forces with another like-minded individual, Dylan McIntosh, to form an organization: Elevate Wells County. Elevate is an acronym standing for “Empowering, Lifting, and Encouraging Voices for Advancement, Tolerance, and Equity.” In the past two months, Elevate has incorporated, been granted 501(c)3 status, and received tax-exempt status.
Elevate Wells County’s mission is to “promote diversity, inclusivity, and equity by facilitating educational initiatives, encouraging open dialogue, and fostering cooperation. We strive to elevate marginalized communities, nurture empathy and acceptance, and challenge physical and metaphorical barriers.”
Dive In, Above, and Beyond will all operate as programming under Elevate. Additionally, the board is establishing further initiatives, activities, and services aimed at uplifting marginalized individuals within Wells County. These communities include racial and ethnic minorities, the LGBTQ+ population, persons with disabilities, and individuals who are neurodiverse.
