A recent Norwell High School graduate and a Southern Wells senior were recognized Saturday evening with one of the most distinguished awards offered at the 4-H fair each year. Emma Bailey and Kammy Miller earned the 2023 Caley Memorial Awards. Anya Aulbach, 4-H youth extension educator, presented the accolade to the winners.

This is the 55th year of the Caley Award, which honors the memory of Bill Caley and his four children — Kirby, Kent, Kris Ann, and Kevin — who were all killed in a car accident on route to the fair in 1965.

Two 4-H members in Wells County who show up in their communities, schools, and churches with exceptional skills in leadership, sportsmanship, citizenship, and personality are selected for the honor each year. Winners are unaware until their names are read.

Miller, a nine-year member of 4-H and a soon-to-be senior at Southern Wells, smiled from ear to ear as she walked onto the stage. Miller has been involved in meat goats, arts and crafts, animal education, dairy goats, gardening, woodworking, gift wrapping, and several more projects. Miller is also a Junior Leader and hopes to pursue a degree in agricultural business management.

Bailey, a 10-year member and a member of the Rockcreek Rollers 4-H club, recently graduated from Norwell High School. Throughout her time in 4-H, Bailey has participated in beef, dairy feeder, dairy beef, swine, and sewing projects. Though Bailey will end her 4-H career as fair festivities finish up this week, she plans to attend Purdue University and pursue a degree in animal science, with hopes to become a veterinarian.

Miller and Bailey also received a $500 scholarship and a personalized plaque with their names engraved on it.
