Lew A. Simerman, 77, of Ossian, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022, at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born on May 13, 1945, in Fort Wayne to the John Simerman and Lucille (Smith) Simerman. Lew was united in marriage to Mona J. McIntire on June 18, 1966, at Ossian United Methodist Church.
He proudly served his country in the Air National Guard, serving from Feb. 7, 1963 and honorably discharged on Feb. 6, 1969.
He was a member of Decatur Church of God where he served as an Elder, sang in the choir and was a member of the Building and Grounds Board. Lew also served as a board member for LOVE, Inc.
Lew graduated from Ossian High School in the class of 1963. Lew then went on to obtain a four year apprenticeship for Millwright International Harvester. He first worked at Hower Tool in Ossian, and then International Harvester for 19 years, and retired in 2005 from General Motors after 19 years of service.
He loved serving the Lord and spending time with family. He also enjoyed gardening, golfing, fishing, traveling and raising pheasants.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mona J. Simerman of Ossian; two daughters, Gwen (Darin) Scheumann of Ossian and Sherry Simerman of Fort Wayne; two grandsons, Jay and Joe Scheumann; one great-granddaughter, Winter Scheumann; brother, David (Judi) Simerman of Fort Wayne; and sister, Judith (Gene) Parker of Ossian.
Lew was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, at the Decatur Church of God with Pastor Brent Doster and Pastor Jamie Conkling officiating.
Family and friends will be received from 2-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
Preferred memorials can be given to Hero Meals or LOVE, Inc., both of Decatur.
