Brooks D. Mounsey, 87, former Wells County Sheriff, passed away early Friday morning, December 23, 2022, at his residence in Knightstown, Ind., surrounded by his family.

He was born on February 27, 1935, in Wells County to Victor V. & Grace C. (Lockwood) Mounsey. 

A 1953 graduate of Chester Center High School, Brooks served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He drove trucks for Yellow Freight System before attending Indiana University State Police training and served with the Indiana State Police Department from 1967 until 1990. He served on the Wells County Sheriff’s Department from 1990 to 2015, when he was elected and served two terms as Sheriff.

Brooks was a member of the Markle Church of Christ, American Legion Post #111 of Bluffton, the Indiana Sheriff’s Association and Retired Troopers Association.

On June 19, 1982, Brooks and Beverly J. (Anderson) were married in Fort Wayne.

Survivors include his wife Beverly J. Mounsey and grandson Jack Fort, both in Knightstown; three daughters ,Victoria (Phil) Patz of Lafayette, Teri Mounsey of Indianapolis, and Traci Mounsey of Bluffton; grandchildren Brandt (Kristen) Patz, Bryce Patz and Calvin Huffman of West Lafayette, and Haley (Kyle) Bandy of Indianapolis. 

Brooks is also survived by sisters, Marcella Egly of Warren and Karen Collum of Katy Texas; brothers, Kay Mounsey of Warren and Bill Mounsey of Bradenton, Fla.

He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Max Mounsey, Mona Jean Highlen, Vera Scott, Phyllis Ulmer and Dean Mounsey. 

Visitation Hours will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2022, at the Thoma/Rich, Lemler Funeral Home in Bluffton. 

Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 30, 2022, at the Bluffton First United Methodist Church with Gerald Moreland officiating, with calling for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Entombment will follow at the Northridge Community Mausoleum, located at Fairview Cemetery, with full military honors by the United States Army Honor Guard and the American Legion Post 111 Honor Guard.

In the place of flowers and gifts, the family prefers memorials being made to the Brooks Mounsey Memorial Fund and made payable to Beverly Mounsey.
