Last month, the Regional Sewer District began raising funds to assist households in need in the process of decommissioning and connecting septic systems in Murray and Liberty Center.
As of Tuesday, RSD treasurer Leon Berning said they’ve been able to raise $3,500. Depending on the property and contractor, Berning said this process could cost anywhere from $1,500-$2,000.
Berning said they’ve received one applicant — a widow on a fixed income — who was approved for assistance.
Council member Jim Oswalt then asked if the RSD was still planning to charge a fine for those unable to complete the project within the given 90 days. Berning said there would likely be exceptions for special circumstances, but individuals should reach out if there in financial need.
To apply, residents may reach out to Rick Smith, Lancaster Township trustee, or Trent Markley, Liberty Township trustee. Applicants will be screened through an application process, determining their financial status, capability and other qualifying factors. Donations are handled through a Wells County Foundation fund and paid directly to the contractor.
