The Wells County Regional Sewer District is giving people in Liberty Center and Murray one last chance to connect to their communities’ sanitary sewer collection system — or else.
The collection systems have been installed in the two unincorporated Wells County towns for several months, but Lewis Brown, the district’s superintendent, said Tuesday night that some 20 or 21 property owners have not yet connected their residences to them. Lewis said some have contacted contractors to do the work but others have not.
Mark Burry, the RSD’s attorney, said the Wells County Department of Health would support the RSD in getting those final connections made. Brown noted that the local health department could have the backing of the Indiana Department of Health.
The net effect is that a residence could be condemned as unfit for habitation if the septic system that serves the structure is not decommissioned.
“We hope it doesn’t come to that,” Burry said.
Bruce Stinson, the RSD’s president, hopes the matter will be resolved soon. “It’s good to know that the (county) health department has our back,” he said.
It was also noted during the meeting that the installation of the collection system in Craigville is expected to be completed by June. Also, VTF Excavation, the contractor for the sewer installation, will soon by installing pipe in Kingsland.
