NHS baseball beats Eagles

Norwell’s baseball team edged Columbia City 8-7 on Monday to earn a share of the NE8 title. 

The Knights (14-10) trailed 7-5 after three innings, but added a run in the fourth and another in the sixth to make it a 7-7 game going into the seventh. 

Cade Shelton led off that seventh with a single. Then with two outs, Trey Bodenheimer hit a single to drive in Shelton for the go-ahead run. 

The Knights finished with 13 hits as a team. Drew Graft went 4-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI, and two runs scored. Bodenheimer ended the day going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. 

Brody Bolyn also went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run. 

On the mound, Shelton came up with the win. He pitched the last three innings in relief and allowed no runs on one hit while striking out seven and walking just one. 

Lleyton Bailey started and pitched the first 2 1/3 innings, but allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits to go with two strikeouts and a walk. 

Graham Gaier came in for the next 1 2/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out two. 

On Saturday, Norwell lost 5-3 to Concordia. 

The Knights had six hits in the game, which included a double by Luke Graft. 

Bailey was the losing pitcher, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits in two innings of work while striking out two and walking one.

The Knights finished the conference season with a 5-2 record, which tied Bellmont and DeKalb for the top of the conference. 

The Knights will play their next game on Wednesday at Northrop.

Tigers softball defeats Wayne

Bluffton’s softball team came up with a 15-5 win over Wayne in five innings in Tuesday’s home game. 

Bluffton (4-16) led 7-5 going into the bottom of the fifth and exploded for eight runs to win the game early by the 10-run rule. 

The Lady Tigers had 14 hits as a team. Madison Smith went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI, and a run. Ayla Nern went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs. Averi Petty went 2-for-3 with two runs. Tressa Renner went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Isabella Stout went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Marly Drayer hit a triple, and Kayla Kiefer added a double. 

Petty pitched all five innings on the mound to get the win. She allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out one and walking three. 

The Tigers will host Winchester in their next game on Thursday. 

BHS baseball falls to Adams Central

Bluffton’s baseball team lost 12-4 to Adams Central on Tuesday. 

The Tigers (11-11) scored two runs in the top of the first for their only lead of the game. The Jets responded with five in the bottom of the first and led 7-3 after three innings. 

The Tigers added a fourth run in the sixth, but the Jets went off for five runs again in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory. 

The Tigers had eight hits in the game, with Kyler Rolston coming up with three of them. Andrew Onuegbu added two hits. 

Braxton Betancourt pitched four innings for Bluffton and struck out eight. Eli Garrett pitched the other two innings. 

Bluffton was also defeated 8-1 in its game against Blackhawk Christian on Monday. The Tigers scored their only run of the game in the first inning. 

Bluffton finished the game with six hits. Onuegbu went 2-for-4 with a double and a run to lead the Tigers’ bats. 

Brock Drayer suffered the loss on the mound, allowing two runs in 2/3 innings. He did not allow a hit, but walked five Braves. 

Next up for Bluffton will be a road matchup at Norwell on Thursday.

Norwell golf gets 2nd in tri-match

Norwell’s boys’ golf team shot a season-low 161 to defeat East Noble, but came up just short against Bellmont in Tuesday’s match at Timber Ridge Golf Course. 

Augie Mann shot a 34 (-2) to finish as medalist and lead the Knights. Following him on Norwell were Ethan Ottinger and Daniel Simerman each at 42, Derek Smith at 43, and Kaden Graft at 45.

Norwell JV baseball tops Columbia City

Norwell’s JV baseball team beat Columbia City 3-1 on Tuesday. 

Adam McBride led Norwell on the mound, allowing four hits and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings of work. He also struck out five. Cooper Sloan came in for a two-out save to finish the game. 

Logan Cotton led Norwell at the plate with two hits, and Max Babcock executed a safety squeeze bunt to drive in a run.

Norwell JV softball loses game to Whitko

Norwell’s softball team was defeated 7-4 by Whitko on Tuesday. 

With the game tied 4-4 after four innings, Whitko put up three runs in the fifth and held on for the victory. 

Norwell managed just four hits at the plate. Kaydance Clark hit a double and drove n two runs to lead Norwell’s bats. 

Haley Green was the losing pitcher for Norwell. She allowed three runs on six hits in three innings while striking out two and walking one. 

Norwell also lost its Monday matchup to Columbia City 10-0 in five innings. 

The Lady Knights struggled offensively again with just five hits. Clark had two of them including a double. 

Kailey Eccles suffered the loss on the mound, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in four innings of work while striking out one and walking five. 

Green Valley Senior Golf

Rocky Giltner had a low gross of 42, and Doug Scher had a low net of 34 in the Tuesday Senior Golf League at Green Valley Golf Course. 

Scher, along with Greg Castilow, Ken Lewis, and Joe Bauer were the winning team. 

Rudy Frauhiger was closest to pin, and Bruce Wilson made the longest putt.
