Dr. Patrick Carvel Mann, 85, of Cornelius, North Carolina, and formerly of Morgantown, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on September 2, 2025.
Born in Decatur on March 23, 1940, he was the son of the late Carl Mann and Dorcas Byerly Mann.
Pat grew up on a farm in Ossian, and carried those values of simplicity and hard work throughout his life. He graduated from Lancaster Central High School in 1958, earned a B.S. from Manchester College, and later received both a master’s and a Ph.D. in economics from Indiana University.
In 1967, Pat joined the faculty at West Virginia University in Morgantown as an assistant professor of economics. He remained there for more than three decades, retiring as Professor Emeritus. His research focused on public utility pricing, and he contributed to the state’s early wind energy initiatives.
Outside of work, Pat valued time with family and friends. He enjoyed golf with his sons and friends at the Pines Country Club and, later, despite Parkinson’s, found joy in a “Booze and Books” club in his North Carolina retirement community, where his love of reading thrived.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Mann.
Pat is survived by his wife, Annette Mignogna Mann, originally of Hannastown, Pennsylvania; sons, Jason (Karen) Mann of Davidson, North Carolina, and Brian Mann of Cornelius, North Carolina; granddaughters, Samantha and Ashley Mann of Davidson, North Carolina; siblings, Dennis (Linda) Mann, Tim (Sherry) Mann, Julia (R.D.) Wolheter and Rebecca (Bruce) Copeland; and brother-in-law Joseph (Barbara) Mignogna; along with many nieces and nephews.
A requiem mass will be celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church in Huntersville, North Carolina, on Monday, Sept. 8 at 11:30 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, the St. Ursula Food Pantry (Pursglove, West Virginia), or the St. Mark Catholic Church Growing Home Capital Campaign.
