BHMSD students share their Thanksgiving thoughts

By HOLLY GASKILL

Karen Bell’s preschool students practiced table manners for Thanksgiving this week, learning where to place their napkins and how to pass a plate around the table. They also made feather hats and tried cornmeal pancakes, also called “johnny cakes,” which were said to have been at the first Thanksgiving meal. Thanksgiving traditions vary far and wide, but it’s nearly unanimously a time to be with family, enjoy food and reflect on life’s blessings.

Foregoing many of the holiday’s classic dishes, Bluffton-Harrison preschool students enjoyed some of their favorite snacks during their Thanksgiving meal. Above, Addilyn Carr (right) looks for Charlie Gillette (left) to pass the popcorn in Karen Bell’s classroom.

And with each new season of life, there are new reasons to appreciate and celebrate those essential aspects of Thanksgiving.

In light of this, The News-Banner surveyed an elementary, middle and high school classroom from Bluffton-Harrison schools regarding the following three questions:

1. What is your favorite Thanksgiving food or tradition?

2. What are you thankful for this
year? Why?

3. How do you serve those around you?

Below are some of the students’ responses, filled with fond memories, special recipes, family jokes — and an occasional
misspelling.
