Jaden Tyler Cornett, 23, Markle, was charged with domestic battery in the presence of a child less than 16 years old, a Level 6 Felony. Bond was set at $50,000.
The charges stem from a 911 call officers received approximately one week ago. According to a witness statement, a child from the caller’s neighbor’s house frantically knocked on their door and insisted they contact the police. The child reportedly said Cornett was going to kill her mother and siblings.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the child told Markle police officers she and her siblings had arrived from their grandmother’s home when she heard arguing inside of the house. She entered the house and Cornett reportedly told her to get out. She also told officers she saw Cornett push her mother against the bathroom wall, threaten to push her down the stairs and threaten to slit her throat open. The woman instructed her daughter to find help during the altercation.
As Cornett was placed in handcuffs, he allegedly commented that he was going to “knock himself out.” He then attempted to slam his head against a van on the way towards the police car.
The woman told officers she and Cornett began to fight after she asked him to drive faster on the way home. She reportedly packed a bag after they arrived at their residence with the intention of leaving with her children. She stated Cornett took her cell phone and continued to push her around the home. She also reported that she pulled out a gun to prevent him from assaulting her. He took the gun and placed it into a safe. The child stated this is not the first time something like this has happened.
A no-contact order was read to Cornett at his initial hearing Monday afternoon. He requested to retain private counsel and has bailed out of jail. A status conference for this case is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 2 in the Wells Superior Court.
