Teresa Ley and Rachel Quillen, two registered nurses at the Bluffton Regional Medical Center, were recently nominated by patients for the DAISY Award.
Patients, families and colleagues may nominate nurses for this award from any Lutheran Health Network hospital, RediMed or MedStat urgent care clinic or Lutheran Health Physicians practice.
DAISY Awards are made possible by the DAISY Foundation. The acronym stands for “diseases attacking the immune system,” referring to the memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died in 1999 at the age of 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, an autoimmune disease. His family established the DAISY Foundation.
Ley also received the DAISY Award in 2021. A patient nominated her, writing: “Teresa was my pre-op nurse for two different procedures. Before the second procedure, we were going over my medical history and she recalled being my nurse the first time. I talked about all I’d been through and how it has been such a tough road. She held my hand and prayed for me. I will always remember the love and care she showed for me that day. It was such a comfort. I left feeling like I was more than just a patient.”
Another patient nominated Quillen, writing: “I was scheduled for a procedure but wasn’t feeling well prior to it. Rachel was compassionate and caring, notifying the doctor of possible complications because of how I was feeling. Medications were provided so they could safely continue with the procedure, doing all they could to make the experience less stressful for me. Rachel was wonderful.”
