Bluffton Fire Department dispatched and Liberty Township and Ossian fire departments dispatched to provide mutual aid. When firefighters arrived, the smoke had dissipated but there was still the smell of something very hot inside the apartment. Firefighters managed to trace the source of the smell to two baseboard heaters — one in the bathroom and the other in the kitchen — that were heating up to temperatures exceeding 300 degrees. Power to the heaters was cut and the building’s maintenance supervisor and the Bluffton City Building Inspector were contacted. Liberty Township and Ossian were also advised to disregard the fire run.
Saturday, 5:18 p.m., Peyton’s Northern, 1111 S. Adams St. Semi trailer on fire at loading dock 50. Bluffton Fire Department dispatched. Peyton’s personnel towed the trailer to the semi overflow parking area called the bullpen across the street. When firefighters arrived, they discovered the trailer had smoke pouring from it. Food products in the front half of the semi trailer were on fire. Product was removed from the rear portion of the trailer to allow firefighters access to the area that was burning. It was then discovered that a number of smaller blue totes had gotten so hot that they had melted into one large blob. Because of the danger removing the burning material posed, the fire department used a deluge gun to extinguish the blaze.
