As part of an ongoing effort to honor the last Union soldier or sailor buried in each of Indiana’s 92 counties, a new plaque has been installed next to the grave of Cyrus Young at the Hoverstock Cemetery in Zanesville. The work is being done by the Department of Indiana Sons of Union Veterans. Several members of the Champion Hill, Camp 17 chapter of that group were on hand to install the plaque, seen at lower left, along with a wreath. Standing from left are Al Bowers, Rick Wiegmann, Phil Dyer and Don Morgan standing behind longtime Zanesville resident Melba Edwards. Cyrus Young was a member of the 3rd Ohio Light Artillery during the Civil War. Gib Young (no relation) of the Camp 17 Huntington-based chapter reported that their group is responsible for placing the plaques in 10 northeastern Indiana counties. (Photo courtesy of Gib Young)
