City Engineer Kelly White presented to both the Bluffton Board of Works and the Bluffton Common Council Tuesday an updated set of city standards for their approval.

That approval was quick in coming. Both groups said yes.

The city’s standards — rules for infrastructure such as sewer and water pipes and road construction, that will eventually be taken over by the city — have been a sticking point for some developers. The claim was that Bluffton’s standards were far more stringent, and therefore more costly, than they are in other communities.

White said much time was spent on the updated standards and she was very pleased with the work. “I feel this is the best product we can have at this time,” she said.

She also said it was necessary to consider the standards “a living document,” subject to revision and updating as time marches on.

White admitted that there were some things that the city was “a little heavy-handed on.” She noted that the  proposal approved Tuesday had been on the city’s website since May 16 and that she had not heard any negative comment about that.
