Lunch & Learn at Ouabache State Park last Thursday found the members of the Junior Indiana Master Naturalist class attending to learn about amphibians from Alyssa Linder and Chandler Sonafrank of the Upper Wabash Interpretive Services.

Individuals of all ages attended and learned that amphibians, cold-blooded animals, must have water present to complete their life cycle as their eggs must be laid in water. They also have wet porous skin and are good indicators of the quality of water in their habitat. Salamanders, toads, and frogs are part of the group and the program presenters bought an American toad, chorus frog, cricket frog and a bullfrog for show and tell.

Those attending were encouraged to look at the animals they find, but not to touch. (The frogs that were used for the demonstration were to be returned to where they were found.) The presenters said that crickets and worms are amphibians’ favored food.

The younger folks at the event were invited to come up and demonstrate what sounds frogs make by using marbles, rubber bands and combs.

The next Lunch & Learn event will be held Thursday, July 13, when Rose Nevil and Brent Dausch will be program presenters. For reservations call 260-824-0926 or go to friendsofouabache@gmail.com
