Knights knock off Eagles with walkoff win

The Norwell baseball team walked it off at home against Columbia City 6-5 on Tuesday.

The Knights are now 6-1 in NE8 play to finish the conference regular season, awaiting Huntington North’s final game to determine the overall standings.

Drew Graft hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh that scored the third and final run, bringing home Trey Bodenheimer.

Brody Bolyn and Luke McBride led the team with two hits each, Bolyn with a double and two RBIs.

Lleyton Bailey got the win in relief, tossing three innings and allowing no runs, and striking out four. His record is now 4-0 on the season. Curtis Ellis started and gave up five runs (two were earned) and struck out four.

Norwell will be at home for the final time this season at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 17.

Tigers end girls’ tennis season with loss to Braves

Bluffton’s girls’ tennis team fell in the opening round in the girls’ tennis sectional to Bellmont 5-0 at Norwell High School Tuesday.

Results:

• Olivia Selking defeated Emma Schwartz 5-0, 5-0 in No. 1 singles.

• Emy Faurote defeated Gretchen Crist 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles.

• Leila Jin defeated Hazel Pfister 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in No. 3 singles.

• Isabella Ortiz and Marison Jackson defeated Alexis Grover and Eve Corkwell 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles.

• Kaelyn Snyder and Alyssa Coffey defeated Avery Hunt and Kinzie Fiecther 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Morgan throws no-hitter as Tigers rout Raiders in baseball

The Bluffton baseball team defeated Southern Wells on the road 19-0 in a non-ACAC counted game Tuesday.

Tigers’ starter Griffin Morgan threw a five-inning no-hitter against the Raiders, throwing five innings, walking four, and striking out nine.

Braxton Betancourt, Drew Pressler, and Morgan led the team with three hits each. Betancourt drove in three runs with his three doubles, and Pressler drove in four with a double.

Lukas Gehrett hit a home run and drove in three runs.

Bluffton will host Norwell at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 18.

Southern Wells will be at Anderson Prep for the regular-season finale starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 19.

Knights split with Barons in NE8 softball matchup

Norwell split with DeKalb on the road in softball, winning 10-3 and losing 4-3 in a NE8 game Tuesday.

The Knights finished the conference regular season with a 4-3-1 record.

In Game 1, the Knights were led by Leah Werling’s two hits and drove in a run. Delaney Connett and Emma Bailey had the other two RBIs.

Kayla Watkins earned the loss, throwing two innings and allowing two unearned runs. Madyson Sonnigsen threw four innings, allowing two unearned runs as well, and struck out two.

The team produced eight hits in Game 2, led by Sami Lemler and Nevada Lenwell with two, Lemler with a double and an RBI. Delaney Connett scored three runs on a double, while Jordan Markley drove in two on a double.

Watkins earned the win, throwing four innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Sonnigsen threw three innings in relief, allowing no runs and one hit, striking out three.

Norwell will be at Woodlan at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 17.

Tigers rout Bulldogs in softball

The Bluffton softball team won 16-2 on the road against New Haven Tuesday night.

Marly Drayer, Lily King, and Isabella Stout each had four of the Tigers’ 23 hits. Tressa Renner pounded her first career home run and drove in three runs, while Xzyia Driscoll drove in three runs on a triple.

Kayla Kiefer and Averi Petty had three-hit games.

Petty pitched a complete game, one earned run game, and struck out six, earning the win.

Bluffton will be on the road again to face Fremont at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 17.

Knights earn season best, but falls to Braves in golf

The Norwell boys’ golf team scored its lowest mark of the season at Cross Creek Golf Course in Decatur against Bellmont Tuesday but still ended with the loss.

The team shot a 162, while Bellmont scored a 154.

Ethan Ottinger was the top-scorer for the Knights, shooting a 38, followed by Cooper Sloan with a 40, Derek Smith and Jayden Haines 41, Chase Hulver 43, and Ashton Federspiel 46.

The junior varsity team’s split with a score of 187.

Leading the Knights was Bodie Zimmer, who shared the medalist spot with Brady Malone of Bellmont at 45. Following Zimmer was Grant Misher with a 46, Owen Wallis 47, Luke Herrel, and Phil Gaier with 49s.

Norwell will be at the NE8 conference meet next at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 20, at Cobblestone Golf Course.

Knights beat Starfires in JV softball

The Norwell junior varsity softball team defeated South Adams on the road 19-9 on Tuesday.

The Knights were led by Alyssa Krinn and Hayden Herman, with three hits and three RBIs each. Makayla Young also had three RBIs and had a double.

Alli Crow, Ayla Nern, and Abby Wagner had extra-base hits.

Wagner got the win, throwing four 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs, and struck out five.

Norwell will finish up the regular season at home against Adams Central starting at 5 p.m. Friday, May 19.

Knights junior varsity baseball wins over Eagles

The Norwell junior varsity baseball team got the 7-3 victory on the road against Columbia City on Tuesday.

The Knights compiled nine hits in the game, led by Cayden Cassel’s three singles that drove in two runs. Adam McBride tallied two hits, including a double and two RBIs, while Noah Turk drove in a run on a double and two hits.

Max Babcock got the win, throwing just 2/3 of an inning and allowing three runs on two hits. Cassel threw five 2/3 and allowed no runs on one hit, and struck out 11.

Norwell will host Northrop at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 17.

Canterbury defeats Norwell, Bluffton in middle school golf

Canterbury defeated both Bluffton and Norwell at Timber Ridge Golf Course Tuesday.

The Cavaliers won with a team score of 168, Bluffton second with 185, and Norwell third with 199.

The Tigers were led by Abe Atkins with a score of 44, followed by Gibson Grieser with 46, Reid Abbett 47, Rafe Gerber 48, and Gavin Grieser 50.

Norwell’s leading scorer was Isaiah Geoglein with a score of 45, Tripp Mitchell with 49, Eli Sonnigsen 52, Cash Fegely 53, and Sam Squires 57.

Bluffton won the junior varsity match with a score of 208, followed by Canterbury 216, and Norwell 246.

The Tigers were led by Parker Klopfenstein’s 48. Following Klopfenstein was Will Ault at 50, Bennett Stoller with 54, Abram Gehrett 56, and Cooper Pearson 59.

Norwell was led by Westin Miller’s 54, followed by Emma Burnau with 61, Cole Balkema 64, Vivian Reidenbach 67, and Illyana Sailors 69.

Knights swept in middle school soccer games

The Norwell Middle School soccer teams both fell in post-season play Tuesday night.

The boys’ team fell 2-1 against Paul Harding in the second round of the sectional tournament. The lone goal-scorer for the Knights was by Elias Musselman, assisted by Dallas Brinson.

The girls’ team lost 2-1 against Huntington Riverview in a shootout. The game went to overtime after both teams failed to score. Maggie Neuenschwander had a great night in net for the Knights.
