The Bluffton Parks Department is excited to announce the Spring session of Senior Snippets. These are classes focused on the Senior population, with weekly lessons on various topics. These free talks will be held at different locations in town, so make a note in your calendar after signing up. Some topics have limited space, so you must call 824-6069 or e-mail events@blufftonindiana.gov to register.
Mondays, April 17 – May 15
11 a.m. – Movie Club – is led by Catherine Campbell at the Wells County Library. The class will watch the 1968 classic “To Kill a Mockingbird” starring Gregory Peck and Robert Duvall, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, along with supporting documentaries.
12 p.m. – Tech Games – is taught by Emily Marshall at the Wells County Library. Get help downloading a variety of games to your smartphone or tablet, talk about strategy as a group, and play them during class. Each session will cover a different card or puzzle game. Plan to bring your phone or tablet, or let us know if you need to use one of the library’s devices.
2 p.m. – Health and Nutrition – is presented by Molly Hoag and Bill Horan at the Washington Park Indoor Pavilion. Topics include Hydration for Health, where you learn the effects of hydration/dehydration, and taste-test-infused water recipes. Superfoods for Seniors will discuss the importance of Superfoods and how to incorporate them into our meals. Cooking Under Pressure will cover everything you need to know about Electric Programmable Pressure Cookers (EPPC), such as an Instant Pot. You will expand your food safety knowledge and learn a few recipes during the food demonstration. Gardening for Your Health will teach you how growing your own vegetables can have added health benefits. Not only are fresh fruits and vegetables more nutritious, but gardening can also provide mental and physical benefits as well. We will offer suggestions and tips on how to get the most from your gardens. Finally, Food Allergies 101 will explain why allergies are on the rise. This presentation defines a food allergy, identifies the signs & symptoms of an allergic reaction, lists the most common food allergens, reviews ways to prevent an allergic reaction, and provides resources for further reference and education.
Tuesdays, April 18 – May 16
10 a.m. – Foreign Countries – Join us at the Washington Park Indoor Pavilion to listen to area High School exchange students from Norwell High School talk about life in their home country. Countries include Spain, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Georgia, and Romania.
Wednesdays, April 19 – May 17
10 a.m. –Wells County History – Stop by the Wells County Historical Museum and enjoy an in-depth look at local history. Connie Brubaker will be discussing the Underground Railroad in Wells County and Indiana. Learn how to research your property for the original owners, cover details on the Civil War/Morgan’s Raiders and plan a field trip to the Courthouse.
Thursdays, April 20 – May 18
3 p.m. – Crochet Lessons– Instructor Kathy Gehrett will teach new and advanced students how to crochet at the indoor pavilion at Washington Park. Bring a size H hook; class size is limited to the first 12 who preregister.
