The Bluffton Lions Club is celebrating 75 years of service to the city and its surrounding area, and is inviting the public to its celebration the evening of Nov. 15.
The dinner will be held at the Lighted Gardens reception hall on Ind. 1 north of Ossian. A social time begins at 6 p.m. with dinner being served at 6:30 p.m.
The meal will consist of an entrée choice of baked ham steak topped with a pineapple glaze or broiled cod with a herbed butter sauce, plus a garden green salad with assorted dressings, an Idaho baked potato with butter and/or sour cream, California blend veggies, and iced carrot sheet cake for dessert. The cost is $20 per person. Reservations must be made as soon as possible by calling Sandy Zeigler at 260-403-3092.
Lions are best known for eye care, starting with screening children of nursery age and preschoolers; the screenings are offered without charge. The Lions also collect used eyeglasses throughout the community.
The idea of using used eyeglasses in Third World countries was the innovation of Bluffton’s own William “Bill” Trubey, the late Lions past district governor. As reported in a May 25, 2000, article in the News-Banner, “Dr. Trubey participated in the Volunteer Optometric Service for Humanity, a medical missionary service in at least 23 medical missions delivering medical care to at least seven countries including (the) Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Tanzania.”
Trubey was the first Bluffton Lions Club member to go through all of the local offices and then state positions to become the first district governor from the Bluffton Lions Club. Since then two additional Bluffton Lions Club members have also obtained that status. The last two District 25B governors are members of the Bluffton Lions Club, Lion Past Council Chair Jerry Zeigler and currently Lion District Governor Sandy Zeigler.
The entertainment for the 75th anniversary celebration will be provided by Bluffton vocalist Susie Wood.
Dress for the evening is business casual.
