Friends of the Shelter will meet Monday afternoon

Friends of the Shelter, the organization that provides support for the Bluffton/Wells County Animal Shelter, will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, in the Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 128 E. Market St.

The meeting is open to the public. 

Regional Sewer District board will meet Monday

The board of the Wells County Regional Sewer District will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, in Room 105, the multi-purpose room on the lower level of the Wells Carnegie Government Annex, 223 W. Washington St.

Topics on the agenda include:

• Superintendent’s report and update.

• Engineering report — Update of Phase 1 and status and schedule for Phase 2.

• Attorney’s report, including a discussion of Phase 3 funding.

Ossian Town Council will meet Monday evening

Bluffton Board of Works to meet Tuesday afternoon

The Bluffton Board of Public Works and Safety will meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, in the Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 128 E. Market St.

Topics on the agenda include:

• Consideration of liquidated damages for the construction of the water plant.

• Consideration of action concerning junk on three properties — on Lancaster, Oak, and Market streets.

• A review of revised city standards.

• A discussion of engineering for a new electrical substation.

• A request for handicapped parking, brought to the board by American Legion Post 111.

• An alley request, brought to the board by Foundations of Truth.

• A personnel matter, brought to the board by Fire Chief Don Craig.

• A request to close a street for the annual duck race, brought to the board by Family Centered Services.

• A personnel matter, brought to the board by Brad Penrod of the city’s Electric Department.

• A discussion of utility account deposits, brought to the board by Operations Manager Jon Oman.

Northern Wells school board will meet Tuesday

The board of the Northern Wells Community Schools will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the school district’s central office, 312 N. Jefferson St. in Ossian.

Topics on the agenda include:

• Superintendent’s report — opening staff days and the first day for students, and the strategic plan and 2022-23 work sessions.

• Personnel matters, including 13 resignations and five hiring recommendations.

• Behavioral health center memorandums of understanding.

• Donations to employee appreciation — $500 from Security Benefits and Lincoln Investment.

• Discussion of a weighted grade point average system and scale for Norwell High School.

• Approval of a continuing education guidance document.

Wells County Public Library board will meet Tuesday

The board of the Wells County Public Library will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, in the meeting room of the main library, 200 W. Washington St.

Topics on the agenda include:

• The librarian’s and treasurer’s reports.

• Setting of budget calendar.

• Approval of several budgetary resolutions.

• Director updates.

The annual meeting will follow the regular meeting. Topics on that agenda will include the nomination committee report, election of officers, and reading of the by-laws.

County Council will start budget reviews Wednesday

The Wells County Council will consider department budgets and the county budget as a whole starting Wednesday, Aug. 10.

Presentations are scheduled starting at 8 a.m. and continuing through the early afternoon.

Additional budget meetings are scheduled for Aug. 11, 16, and 18. Public hearings will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, for the Wells County, Solid Waste District, and Rock Creek Conservancy District’s budgets. Those budgets are slated to be adopted Tuesday, Oct. 4.

The meetings will be held in Room 105, the multi-purpose room in the lower level of the Wells Carnegie Annex, 223 W. Washington St. in Bluffton.

UWRBC will meet  Wednesday morning

The board of the Upper Wabash River Basin Commission will meet at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, Aug. 10, at the Wells County Public Library, 200 W. Washington St.

Topics on the agenda include:

• Update on the status of the administrative secretary’s position.

•  Treasurer’s report.

• Update on Lakes and Rivers Enhancement Grant for Little River functional assessment in Huntington.

• Request for $2,000 annual contributions from county commissioners.

• Agency’s presence at Geneva’s sesquicentennial celebration.

• Update on LARE Grant for the Bluffton Parks Department Rivergreenway/Wabash River functional assessment.

• Review of the 2023 proposed budget.
