Imagine an official letter delivered to your home, informing you that some unknown donor has left you a very large sum of money. You call the numbers provided and are given a date to visit an attorney in order to hear the details and collect the unexpected bequest. In a world of scams and letters from unscrupulous human beings, your first reaction may well be skepticism. In the “real world,” things like this just don’t happen.
If you have a family that relies on your income to provide life’s necessities, you probably already understand the value of maintaining some form of life insurance. A good insurance agent helps you assess your financial worth and plan for the unexpected so that the people who depend on you are cared for after you are gone.
Although Hollywood and novels spin tales of generous benefactors who unexpectedly provide solutions to our financial problems, the reality is seldom as pictured by our favorite director or author. Without our own careful planning, there is no white knight ready to rescue us from the challenges of life.
King David recognized that all the riches provided by his royal status were nothing apart from God. Psalm 16 speaks of his dependence on God and his admiration for the godly people he considers to be heroes (Ps. 16:3). He even pledged that he would not imitate the habits of people who “chase[d] after other gods (vs. 4).” David acknowledged God alone as his “portion” and “cup of blessing”, followed by praising the Creator for providing “a beautiful inheritance (vs. 6).”
According to David, his legacy came from several practices:
• He accepted the counsel of the Lord (vs. 7),
• Allowed the Lord to guide him, and
• Remained unshaken in God’s supportive presence (vs. 8).
• David rejoiced and rested in his relationship with God (vs. 9), and
• Trusted completely His promise of eternal life (vs. 10, 11).
Despite the centuries between David’s words and our modern world, today’s believers are also guaranteed a beautiful inheritance in the world to come. Eternity in heaven is our ultimate birthright as children of God when we recognize our dependence on Him for salvation.
Don’t count on that letter in the mail for your inheritance. Accept God’s gift of love in Jesus and your eternal benefits can begin today.
