NHS golf places 7th at Carroll
The Norwell boys’ golf team shot a 373 at the Carroll Invitational on Saturday to place seventh out of 14 teams.
The Knights were led by Augie Mann, who shot a 78 for the sixth-best individual score of the day over Autumn Ridge’s 18 holes.
Following Mann on Norwell were Derek Smith at 97, Luke Herrell at 98, Kaden Graft at 100, and Chase Hulvey at 106.
Columbia City finished first in the team standings, shooting a 315. Homestead took second at 316, and Carroll Blue came in third at 331.
Homestead’s Jack Burda and Columbia City’s Sean Bledsoe each shot a 74 for the best individual score, with Burda taking first overall by tiebreaker.
The Knights will tee off again on Tuesday at Leo.
NHS softball splits DH with Starfires
Norwell’s softball team split a doubleheader at home with South Adams on Saturday, losing the first game 9-8 and winning the second 19-13.
In the first game, the Lady Knights (2-2) led 5-4 after four innings, but the Starfires added two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to lead 8-5 going into the seventh. While Norwell did score three runs in that final inning, South Adams scored one of its own to escape with the win.
The Knights had 10 hits at the plate, with Jordan Markley leading the way. She went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Sami Lemler and Allyson Burtron each added two hits.
Lemler suffered the loss on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing nine runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out two and walking two.
In the second game, Norwell trailed 10-3 after four innings, but used a 10-run fifth inning to take the lead and added four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh for insurance.
Norwell totaled 19 hits in that game with five coming from Burtron. She went 5-for-6 with two doubles, four runs, and seven RBIs.
Hannah Troyer went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs, and four RBIs. Brielle Nunley and Lemler each had three hits as well.
Nunley was the winner on the mound, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in four innings of work while striking out five and walking none.
Norwell returns to action on Monday at Adams Central.
SW softball wins 1, loses 1 to Wabash
Southern Wells’ softball team split a home doubleheader with Wabash on Saturday, starting with a 23-7 loss and finishing with a 19-5 victory. Both games ended after five innings by the 10-run rule.
In the first game, the Lady Raiders (2-3) led 4-2 after one inning, but Wabash exploded for eight runs in the second and never looked back.
While the visitors had just 11 hits in the game, they were able to take advantage of 23 walks issued by the Raiders’ pitching staff.
At the plate, the Raiders were led by Catalina Tucker, who went 3-for-3 with three hits, three RBIs, and a run. Jadyn Yencer added two hits, and Raigen Tarr and Cheyenne Neuenschwander each added a double.
It was the Raiders’ turn to light up the scoreboard in the second game as they totaled 12 hits and drew 11 walks. They got going with an 11-run first inning and never looked back.
Brittany Costello led the charge at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, four RBIs, and three runs. Tucker went 2-for-4 with a double, four RBIs, and three runs. Kayleigh Jones added two hits, Tarr hit a double, and Collena Reeves also drove in four runs.
Jones pitched a all five innings to get the win, allowing just two hits and striking out two while walking nine.
Southern Wells’ next game will be at Wayne on Monday.
NHS boys’ track wins Patriot relays
Norwell’s boys’ track team took first place out of five teams in Saturday’s Patriot Relays at Heritage with 130 points.
Drew Ringger won the high jump and took second in long jump. Kellen Zimmer won the pole vault, and Grant Meyer took second. Trevon Stoppenhagen won the 100 meter dash, and Jake Parker won the 110 meter hurdles.
The Knights also won the 4×400 meter relay and took second in the 4×100 and 4×200.
The Lady Knights placed fourth out of seven teams with 62 points.
Emerson Meredith took first in pole vault, and Ari Smith tied for second in the event. Claire Bailey won the 100 meter hurdles. Norwell also took second in the 4×400 meter relay.
Both of Norwell’s teams will take the track again on Tuesday at home against Bellmont.
Raiders baseball falls on road at Blackford
Southern Wells’ baseball team lost 13-5 in Friday’s game at Blackford.
The Raiders (0-3) led 3-1 after the top of the third, but Blackford went off for seven runs in the bottom of the third and added four more in the fourth to take a commanding lead. Southern Wells managed just two more runs in the fourth inning.
As a team, the Raiders had eight hits. Evan Reynolds went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs. Caleb Johnson, Colten Holmes, and Owen Vickrey each hit a double as well.
Branson Rheinhart suffered the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out two and walking one in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Southern Wells hosts South Adams on Monday in its next game.
Bluffton softball loses twice to Central Noble
Bluffton’s softball team lost both games in Saturday’s doubleheader at Central Noble, first falling 17-6 and then again 10-6.
Bluffton (0-5) lost the first game by the 10-run rule in five innings after Central Noble scored three runs in the fifth to take an 11-run lead and end things early.
Averi Petty suffered the loss on the mound for Bluffton and led the Tigers at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Tyrah Shaw added a double and two RBIs.
The second game was much closer for the Tigers. They trailed 10-2 going into the seventh, but did not go down without a fight by scoring four runs in the seventh. However, it was not enough to overcome the seven errors they committed earlier in the game.
Shaw suffered the loss on the mound in that one. At the plate, Bluffton got doubles from Shaw, Kayla Kiefer, and Madison Smith. Claire Craighead added a triple, and Tressa Renner had a pair of singles. Kiefer also led the team in RBIs with two.
Bluffton will be back at it with a road game at Southwood on Monday.
Norwell JV softball team tops Jay County
Norwell’s JV softball team defeated Jay County 17-7.
The Lady Knights did most of their damage in the second inning when they scored 10 runs. They added four more in the third and three in the fifth to win by the 10-run rule.
At the plate, Norwell had 20 hits. Nevada Lenwell and Addison Keller each had four of them. Kaydance Clark, Teagan Lesley, and Kailey Eccles each added two.
Eccles was also the winner on the mound, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits in three innings of work while striking out five and walking two.
