Nancy Ellen Bliss Hughes, elected to rejoin the love of her life, Paul F. Hughes on April 21, 2022. High school sweethearts, they were married for 64 years.
Nancy was born to Ruel and Evelyn Hottell Bliss Augu. 10, 1933, in Corydon. She was a graduate of Corydon Central High School. Her family also lived in Scottsburg, Shelbyville and Bluffton, returning to Corydon upon retirement to build the family log cabin. In Bluffton, she worked for several years with Scott and VanWinkle Optometry and also worked for a time at the Best Western Motel in Corydon. Nancy was an active member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church her entire life, often teaching children’s Bible classes. She supported her family by volunteering as 4-H and Girl Scout leaderships.
She enjoyed collecting glass and fabrics which she loved to use in sewing and quilting and was an avid reader. Gardening, camping, and traveling were hobbies she enjoyed. Raising her family was the hobby she loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Larry, and Jackie; and a sister, Judy Foreman.
Survivors include her son, Dale F. (Joanne) Hughes of Brownsburg; daughters, Debi (Ron) Frederick of Corydon, Tami (Pat) Runyon of Bluffton and Sandi Lemmel of Corydon; sisters, Betty Bliss Hughes and Pat Bliss Sams, both of Corydon; brother-in-law, Donald Foreman of Elizabeth; seven grandchildren, Chris Frederick, Karena Schroeder, Audrey McAbee, Harrison and Kelsey Hughes, and Noah and Hannah Lemmel; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon. Pastor Gary Valentine will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Corydon. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 29, at the Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon and again from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, also at yje Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon.
