Only 11 of Indiana’s 92 counties are out of the red — in terms of COVID-19, that is — after Wednesday’s weekly update by the Indiana Department of Health.

Those 11 counties include Wells and four counties adjoining it — Adams, Blackford, Huntington, and Jay.

The numbers for Wells County show 5,637 positive cases, of which 52 are now. The county has also had 17,722 individuals test for the virus, which includes 33 new people in Wednesday’s update.

The seven-day positivity rate for new individuals tested is 31.6 percent. The seven-day positivity rate for all tests is 13.6 percent, a rate that is lower than the rate the previous week.

The other counties that are in orange this week are Miami County in north central Indiana; Fountain and Warren counties on the state’s western border; Fayette County in east central Indiana; and Jefferson and Switzerland counties along the Ohio River in southern Indiana.

The numbers on the Indiana Department of Health’s COVID-19 dashboard also show that the delta variant of the original coronavirus remains the leading strain of the virus in terms of infection in the state at 56.19 percent. The omicron variant is at 43.7 percent.

However, the dashboard shows the omicron variant gained 43 percent during the last week while the delta variant lost 42.7 percent.

The omicron variant is considered much more contagious but is generally regarded as being less virulent than delta.
