The Town of Zanesville will be 175 years old and come July 29 we will be celebrating its birthday with an all day fun festival. Things are falling into place and a new brochure of events will be out soon.

We have been working on a special stamp (not a mailing stamp) that will be available at the post office to mark the celebration on your outgoing mail or just for stamping memorabilia.

New Town of Zanesville signs have been ordered to be placed on all four entries into town.

Just a note: On July 1, 1847, one year before Zanesville was born, the U.S. Post Office issued its first general issue postage stamp, a 5-cent stamphonoring Benjamin Franklin, the first postmaster general under the Continental Congress, and a 10-cent stamp honoring George Washington.

There may still be time to sign up for Centershot Archery at the Zanesville Community Church of God. The program starts for youths ages 10 and over at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 10. Call 638-4239 for more information.

Get ready for your garage sale and put your stuff out on both Friday, July 28, and Saturday, July 29. You can register with Diane Miller at 705-0534 to be on the list that she will hand out. She is also getting new garage sale signs.

A performance of the Apple Jack Cloggers has been confirmed. They will be dancing at the Tower Life Center at 11:30 a.m. right in front of the car show DJ trailer on the top parking lot.

Bridge work will close South County Line Road over the St. Mary’s River between Winchester Road and U.S. 27 until Nov. 19 to replace a bridge deck. For more information call 260-449-7369.

My sister’s Celebration of Life was just that. The church was filled with family and friends and we all had a good time remembering a wonderful woman. Mary Lou McBride Burkhart will be thought of often and will be greatly missed at family gatherings.

Please be in prayer for all who have had deaths and illnesses recently.

It was just reported to me that Lions Past District Gov. Jerry Zeigler recently fell when an aluminum ladder gave way and he suffered five broken ribs. He will be recuperating for several weeks. By the grace of God he missed a cement walk and a rototiller nearby that happened to be covered by a tote. Pray for fast recovery. Jerry and his wife Sandy live in Bluffton.

As we have only a month to get ready for our big celebration we make a plea for volunteers to step up and help out. Even if you will have a short time that day to help please let us know. Just call me at 638-4327 and if I don’t answer leave a message.

Tara will need help at the parade at 10 a.m. We are sending out e-mails to lots of organizations and businesses and if you don’t get one and want to enter your business, organization or even family in the parade just call Tara at 760-6070.

I will be contacting the Norwell girls softball players to see if they can be the team that takes on the old timers. They are scheduled to play on the ball diamond at 11:30 a.m. after the parade.

Speaking of the Lions Club ball diamond, you will want to check out the many teams that are using it this year. Sorry I do not have a schedule so you will just have to drop in.

You can now access area information by going to this new app on your cell phone. It is called Wells County Sheriff IN. It will allow you to be informed as to wrecks, road closings, etc. The app is free and is available now on both Apple and Android mobile phones.

The Zanesville Lions are forever scouting for more members as we have lots of work to do keeping the Zanesville Lions Community Park, ball diamond, and playgrounds going. The property is 4 1/2 acres and we have over $500 a month taken out of the checking account for heat, lights, sewer, and insurance.

We have to have lots of fundraisers to cover the expenses and to also fund our free Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Party, and Christmas Party and lighting contest. Among other things we have a 5K and now sponsor the annual Fun Festival. In the winter, September to April, we have monthly meetings sometimes with programs that the public is invited to.

We need to thank Jared Kurtz who heads up the lease of the ball field this year and Randy Frick who donates his time mowing the rest of the park.

Norwell graduate Josh VanMeter is back on the field after being reinstated from the injured list. He plays for the Sounds, the Milwaukee Brewers affiliate. In late April he broke a bone in his lower hand/wrist and returned to the field on June 12. VanMeter is 28 years old and this is his 10th official professional baseball season with five different teams, San Diego, Cincinnati, Arizona, Pittsburg, and now Milwaukee. He last played in the majors for the Pirates in 2022, where he appeared in 67 games. We wish him the best of luck in future goals.
