An online group with which I engage began when someone decided to embrace their natural color and stop dyeing their hair. The Silver Revolution Facebook circle is filled with men and women of all ages who share encouragement, stories, and suggestions that allow followers to find beauty at any stage of life. Whether you thrive as a “silverista” or choose to artificially keep your original hair color, the idea behind this supportive group caused me to consider a spiritual application of this idea.

Based on personal experience, it seems that individuals color their hair in order to do something fun or attempt to slow down the process of aging. The reality of life in a fallen, sinful world is that our current bodies were never meant to last forever. Illness, accidents, and growing older will change us, like it or not.

Beginning with man’s fall in the Garden of Eden, Scripture describes time after time that human beings chose to flout the guidelines provided by their Creator, living instead according to their own wisdom. Each path of defiance led to a variety of consequences – some immediate, others realized only years later. Time and again man attempted to live without acknowledging God’s authority.

The Old Testament book of Joel 2:18-27 speaks of God’s promise to restore the health, safety, and blessings of His people when they turn back to Him. The Lord points out that although the lost years came from their own rebellious actions (Joel 2:25), He will eventually reestablish their health and fortune, that they will “never again be disgraced” because they will “know that I am the Lord your God, and there is no other.” (Joel 2:26, 27)

If you feel the burden of unwise choices and their resulting consequences, know that there is hope. God has His own “Silver Revolution” group, filled with similarly struggling fellow believers. You may find them in work colleagues, at your local church, or even within your own family.

Lean on these fellow travelers. Seek the forgiveness of God. Move ahead in faith. He will restore what you have lost.
