Preliminary plea of not guilty entered for Tony Lee Haney, 26, rural Uniondale, charged with burglary of a dwelling, a Level 4 felony, and theft with a prior conviction for the same or a similar offense, a Level 6 felony. Bond continued at $15,000. Larry Mock appointed public defender.
At 6:15 a.m. on Sept. 10, 2021, sheriff’s deputies responded to a Uniondale residence on a report that a home security system had captured video footage of a man at the residence when no one was home. The proprietor’s relatives were the first to respond and when sheriff’;s deputies arrived, they reported they believed the man whose image was captured on the video may have entered the residence and locked himself inside. They then provided a key for deputies who entered the residence, but could not find anyone inside.
They did observe, however, that foot tracks led from the house to the neighbor’s residence — where Haney lived.
The only thing observed missing from the residence following a thorough check was three $20 bills and a Walmart gift card that was empty of funding.
After checking the video from the surveillance cameras, the investigating deputy noted in his report that he recognized the male walking on the property as Tony Haney, based on prior contacts with Haney from other investigations. The deputy later compared a still from the video with a mugshot of Haney from a previous arrest.
The cameras captured video of the man believed to be Haney entering and later leaving the residence through the back door. As the man left, he reportedly was seen tucking something in his back pocket.As he is leaving, he also apparently realized he was on video and quickly covers his face.
The video then captured images of the man walking directly across the alleged victim’s yard toward the Haney residence.
Upon further investigation and after speaking with the alleged victim, the sheriff’s deputy believed that the man he identified as Haney might have taken a key to the back door during a previous burglary or had possibly entered by defeating the lock to the door. The alleged victim told the deputy she had begun noticing small amounts of money missing from the house starting a couple months prior to the latest incident, but she was unsure if the money had been stolen. She decided to buy a home security system just in case.
