Local fire departments responded early Wednesday morning to a fire in a wooded area behind 1810 Brook Ct. in Ossian.

In a press release, Ossian Fire Department Chief Ben Fenstermaker described the fire as a “large wind-driven woods fire covering an area approximately four acres in size.” Bluffton, Southwest Allen County Fire District and Preble fire departments also responded.

The OFD arrived at 4:56 a.m. and stayed on scene for approximately 2.5 hours. Crews reportedly used five grass trucks and two tankers, as well as two UTVs working by hand to extinguish the fire. The OFD also utilized a drone to identify hot spots.

At approximately 9:56 p.m. Ossian fire crews were called back out to the property for several small fires that had reignited. All fires were extinguished by 10:26 p.m.

David Haiflich, identified as the property manager, was unaware of the source of the fire. The cause is still under investigation.
