The Ossian Police Department will soon see much-needed new rifles.

The council approved a motion to pay $5,470 for rifles from Vance’s Law Enforcement. Ossian Police Commissioner Caleb Chichester also requested approval to order a new police vehicle so that it could be received one year later. The council approved a motion to order the new vehicle at $49,525.

The Ossian Town Council accepted a motion to send a letter discontinuing fire protection services to Jefferson Township residents outside of Ossian beginning Jan. 1 should the board fail to sign the contract.

The topic was discussed briefly during Monday’s council meeting, which followed an hour-long meeting between the township board and the council.

“I don’t know what else to do,” Barkley said. “The town of Ossian can’t keep subsidizing Jefferson Township and that’s what it comes down to.”

No updates were received from the Ossian Parks Department and no members were present during the meeting.

Phil DiNovo and Rod Fetters of Rod’s Rustics asked the council to consider the business’s potential concerns during demolition and a new construction project. DiNovo noted that the closing of West Craig Street would obstruct the flow of traffic for customers’ vehicles and that construction vehicles would need a place to park and could potentially hinder customers’ vehicles.

Fetters noted that the business has brought new people to Ossian from other states, and is now on the Antique Road Tour Map along with other small surrounding cities.

The council also:

• Approved pay application number four to Wayne Asphalt for $260,055.76.

• Approved a motion to pay Fleming Construction $13,851.

• Approved payment to VTF Excavations for work on Baker Drive for $238, 466.44.

• Approved a utility adjustment for $192.17.

• Approved a payment to Quality Greenwood Services for $33,371.18.

• Adopted a plan for the use of ARPA recovery funds.
