Four Bi-County Services athletes won medals at the 55th annual Indiana Special Olympics Summer Games on June 7-9, at Indiana State University and the Rose Hullman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute.
Nearly 3,000 athletes gathered for the three-day event, according to BCS Special Olympics Coordinator Coralee Bowley. Each athlete competed according to their skill level.
Anthony Pfister won gold medals in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races, as well as a sixth-place ribbon in the mini Javelin throw.
Tanner Ginger-Farmer won a gold medal in the 50-meter dash, a silver medal in the softball throw and a fourth place ribbon in the standing long jump.
Robert Wassil won a gold medal in the 400-meter walk and a bronze medal in the softball throw.
Bill Reagan won a silver medal in the softball throw and a bronze medal in the 400-meter walk.
BCS transportation, entry fees and accommodations were funded by a generous donation from the Special Olympics Supporters at Amishville Campground.
Special Olympics was founded by Anderson native and Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Carl Erskine, who died in April. A special participation medal was awarded to each competitor; the medal featured the number 55 on one side for the event’s anniversary and the number 17 on the other side, in honor of the number on Erskine’s Dodgers’ uniform.
