Wells County Republicans gathered Tuesday evening for their annual Lincoln Day Dinner at the 4-H Community Building. All candidates running for any office in the next election were offered an opportunity to tell those attending why they should be voted for in two minutes or less.
The evening got underway as Preston Wright sang the National Anthem and guests were welcomed by the county’s Republican Party Chairman Zach Rodgers. The innovation was offered by Fr. David Violi and Jolin Whicker led the Pledge of Allegiance.
The speaker for the evening was Will Witt, the 27-year-old best-selling author who offered his views on the political scene as he traced his conversion from atheist to Christian.
He encouraged candidates to do the right thing and make good choices for the people they represent. He explained that he felt Republicans needed to concentrate on winning instead of looking to find common ground with others.
And to those who feel there is no purpose in life, he personally felt the answer was finding Christ. He noted that this was his first appearance in Indiana and often speaks to non-friendly audiences, while this one certainly was friendly.
Following Witt’s speech; Wells County Republican Vice Chairwoman Sandy Garcia presented the group’s Abe Award to Rodgers for his outstanding service over the last eight years as the county’s Chairman.
Jody Holloway conducted an active auction for some gift baskets and the evening concluded as Josephine Andrews sang “God Bless America.”
