Normal things are still going on in Zanesville. All three churches are open and you are welcome to attend any one of them.
The Zanesville Lions Community Park, even though it is privately owned by the Zanesville Lions Club, is open to the public from dawn to dusk. Thanks to Randy Frick who does the mowing and to Lion Larry Herron who does most of the weed eating. We still have lots of things to do at the park like painting and repairs. If you have any left over spray paint please let me know and I will pick it up or you can deliver it to my house. Do not leave it outside at the clubhouse!
Centershot is still going on on Monday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Zanesville Community Church of God. This is an archery program and you can bring a lawn chair and watch the shoot. This program continues through Aug. 28.
Good News: We have a softball team willing to take on the Dovertown Old Time Softball Team from Huntington that we have scheduled to play on Festival Day Saturday, July 29, at the Lions Club Ballpark at 11:30 a.m. right after the parade. Michael Caley has offered his team, Uncle Bob’s Sweet-Korn Kernals. You will not want to miss this. Seating is available on the bleachers.
There was a large crowd in town on Saturday evening, July 15, as we welcomed Jon Detweiler, owner of the new Green Door Studio & Gallery. The studio is located on the south side of the large brick building at the four-way stop downtown. Jon is a printmaker, ceramist, and painter. On display were some of his paintings and everyone enjoyed the snacks and the time for meeting Jon’s family. Among the snacks were some creations of Jon’s daughter, and chips and salsas from the other new business in town, “Just Add Chips.”
It has been quite a while since we had a ceramist here in town. As I think back, most of them provided classes in ceramics. I first think of Bernice Snyder who lived over on Broadway. Then there was Peggy Crow who also lived on Broadway and then moved her shop just south of town. I still have the very tall white egrets she made in three sizes. Lots of people displayed them in their picture windows. Then there was Chris Rutenberg who made lots of things. Among them was her coffee mugs in celebration of Zanesville’s 150th year birthday. Kathy Swick, who lived next to me, also had a kiln and many enjoyed her creations until her death.
Ceramics was very popular around here for a long time. One of my best friends, Judy Burnau Highlen, took lessons in Uniondale and she gave me a very beautiful manger and nativity scene for a present one Christmas. It and the egrets will have to be handed down to family. I’m sure Jon will have many customers!
Zanesville and area veterans will have an opportunity to sign up for health care at an outpatient clinic that is set to open this month in Huntington. It is to open on July 31 at 2859 North Park Ave., Suite 110. An enrollment event for veterans interested in receiving care at the new location is 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. on July 24 through 28. Those new to VA Northern Indiana Health Care should bring their DD214. Veterans wanting to transfer their care to the new location can do so during the event.
A recent note from Wendy Bailey tells us that 37 percent of the students surveyed through the organization Alive and Well are often or always overwhelmed with stress and anxiety. These students really do not need these energy drinks. Wendy, who serves Zanesville with the summer program ZYP, is the executive director of Alive and Wells that over the last 2022-23 school year helped 3,100 teens make healthy choices. Wendy reports that they are changing lives and they could not do it without your financial support. To help support them visit the website at www.aliveandwellteens.com. or mail a donation to Alive and Well, 650 N. Main St., Suite B, Bluffton, IN 46714
Are you a Vietnam Veteran? Did you get a copy of the free book “A Time to Honor” on July 15 at the Veterans National Memorial Shrine and Museum on O’Day Road? If not I think when you visit there you will be able to get one. You will need to bring your DD214 form, American Legion, VFW or DAV membership card and present it to the museum staff. Enjoy the visit!
