A husband and wife team are leading an Autism Support Group with hopes to bridge the gap in resources available to people affected by autism. The group is open to people with autism, parents and caregivers of people with autism, and anyone who has interest.
Cyndi and Donald Myers-Betz decided to begin the support group in October of 2018 to help people in Wells County who, like them, were struggling to find adequate support for people with autism.
“There is a lack of resources for people affected by autism in our community,” Cyndi Myers-Betz said. “They usually have to go to Indianapolis or Fort Wayne to even get a diagnosis from a doctor. People have to travel to find vocational rehab or recreational therapy. There is almost nothing in this county. It’s hard in other counties, too.”
She says the group has received visitors and messages from people seeking support outside of Wells County.
“There was a single father that reached out to me not long ago. He has a three-year-old daughter that was just diagnosed,” Myers-Betz said. “He needs support, he’s overwhelmed, but he can’t make it here.”
She said the group recently partnered with My Autism Ally in Fort Wayne to offer Zoom meetings as an alternative attendance option. My Autism Ally is a nonprofit providing support and information to individuals, families, and communities affected by autism in Northern Indiana.
Myers-Betz says that sometimes people are not diagnosed with autism until late into adulthood. She says the group is a place where people can gather together and learn more about diagnostic, treatment, and support services.
“I don’t have all the answers,” says Myers-Betz, “but I can help you find them.”
The group meets from 6 to 8:30 p.m. every fourth Tuesday of the month at 617 S Bennett St. in Bluffton or online via Zoom. Those interested can contact Myers-Betz at 260-273-6126 for more information. Registration is required for childcare purposes only. Childcare and snacks are provided.
