Whether it’s the kitchen drawer held shut by a pesky soup ladle, that closet in the extra room, the backyard shed you’ve been throwing lawn accouterments into for years, or maybe a rented lock-up unit you remember only when the bill comes due, we all have them: dark storage spaces we can’t seem to rid ourselves of. We may be able to push these spots from our minds most of the time, but eventually, they return to haunt us.

Having lived in a reasonably large home for the good part of 30+ years before downsizing to my current address in town, I experienced first-hand the challenge that comes from cleaning out dark spaces before moving. The process of moving allowed me to experience the freedom of owning less, whether through donation or dumpster.

This same attitude of collecting things I once loved and then finding them unnecessary can sometimes be applied to my spiritual life.

Misunderstandings from faulty theology linger, occasionally causing me to misjudge a fellow believer or Jesus seeker. Personal preferences or prejudices may result in thoughtless words and loveless actions, harming others that Jesus loves. Living according to societal norms often seems easier and more culturally acceptable than following closely in the steps of Jesus.

Isaiah 55 is packed with hope for those who are clinging to useless habits and favorite sins. The reader is promised that even without silver, God will provide all that we need, forgiving, restoring, and satisfying us with living water and the choicest of foods. Our Redeemer points out that we must only be ready to give up the water that cannot quench our thirst and the things we mistakenly believe will fulfill the longing of our hearts.

Until we relinquish our hold on the things – physical treasures, unhealthy relationships, favorite sins – that keep us from fully opening our hearts to God, we will find ourselves burdened with useless “things” that prevent joyful obedience to Him.

It’s time to clean out that spiritual closet or shed. Allow God to redeem that dark space and I promise that the change He brings will be worth it.
