Bluffton-Harrison Elementary School students got to learn about the Indianapolis 500 Monday morning.

The Indy 500, known as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” is all too familiar to Hoosiers as a famous racing event held in Speedway, Indiana. near Indianapolis by the IndyCar Series league that has taken place nearly every year since 1911. IndyCar drivers can hit up to over 200 miles per hour, hence the nickname.

Fourth grade teacher at BHES, Kyan Harris, helped put together an Indy 500 Festival Mobile Study Trip. Students learned about the history of the race, traditions,  equipment and understood all types of race flags.

At one of the learning stations, kids were able to view what a real-life car in the race looks like and the design of the car. At another, students waved the flags they had just heard about.
