If you have ever felt irrelevant, you’re not alone. Inconsequential. Insignificant. Unnecessary. The opposite of what we wish to be.
Parents experience this the first time a toddler walks confidently into daycare without looking back to see them.
Senior citizens may feel this unwelcome sensation when the passage of time and new innovations mean that their talents are no longer needed.
Children, too, may undergo a sense of irrelevance when busy or exhausted parents fail to recognize their needs, choosing instead to focus on their job, hobby, even a new romance.
The old adage, “The more things change, the more they stay the same” is definitely rooted in historical observation.
From rotary phones to cell phones or satellites with GPS tracking.
Gramophones, record players, 8-track tapes, cassettes, CDs, and MP3 players.
VHS tapes, DVDs, digital streaming services.
The Pony Express, a national postal service, and fiber-optic 5G technology that connects the world in seconds.
What was once considered top-of-the-line ingenuity is now seen as out-of-date, even useless — totally irrelevant.
Yet despite differences between today’s world and days gone by, some things will never lose their relevance.
Man’s need for a Savior will always be relevant. Because of our sinful, fallible natures, we cannot survive this world and eternity without the mercy, love, and forgiveness of our Creator.
God’s love for us will always be relevant. At the heart of salvation is the loving soul of a Master Designer Who knew that His creation would find completion only in relationship with Him.
Regular fellowship with other members of God’s family will always be relevant. God’s children need the encouragement, support, and accountability found in regular gatherings.
The absolute truth of God’s Word will always be relevant. Without this standard of faith and morality, our world creates its own reality.
Daily communication with God through prayer and study of His Word will always be relevant. We need that connection now more than ever.
When you feel like a discarded idea from a bygone era, turn your eyes to heaven. God wants to remind you that your value, your eternal relevance, will always be found in Him.
