What are some of your “go-to” complaints? I’ll start.

The weather. Why does someone raised on a tropical mission field grow up to spend her “golden years” in Indiana?

Money. There never seems to be enough to do all the things I want to do!

Spouses or significant others. Those without one of these complain about loneliness while some in romantic relationships occasionally express envy that they are “tied down” to just one person (even though that one person seemed amazing, originally).

Traffic. Road conditions. Medical situations. Bills. Weight. Job situations. Appearance.

Sound familiar? It’s no surprise that more than one writer has labeled comparison the thief of joy. Unless you love winter sports, comparing Indiana to a tropical climate brings frustration. Financial shortages — even those brought on by our poor choices — can cause stress. Healthy relationships require time and energy. Good physical health is maintained with intent, and work environments can affect our entire outlook on life.

The Apostle Paul realized this when he reminded the early church to look beyond their current situation to the ultimate reality awaiting them in heaven. Understanding human nature, he even went so far as to list some of his personal experiences, which included stoning, beatings with rods, 39 lashes, house arrest, and several shipwrecks during his missionary journeys. If anyone had a reason to complain or compare, Paul would be on the “short list.”

Yet his words challenged believers to see past current situations to their final destination.

“Nothing can separate us from the love of God, the very One Who sacrificed His only Son for us! (Romans 8:31-39)” Our confidence lies not in the circumstances surrounding us but in the God Who gives redemption, strength, and hope in His future Kingdom. We are called to rejoice not only in Christ’s presence today, but to recognize this time on earth is transitory — the best is yet to come for the Christian.

When tempted to live a life of comparison and complaint, remember that the same “all these things” we face in life can and will bring victory as we rely on Jesus.
