Once again, we are reminded that not everyone gets to come home for the holidays. The one group of people who immediately come to mind is our military families. They are often separated for the holidays. And for some young military children it can be difficult to “go see Santa Claus” without your mommy/daddy there too.

Leaving behind an ill husband or a wife who is pregnant can create much anxiety. Military people have a lot on their minds, even during the holidays. In addition to family issues, they have to worry about how their gas masks will fit. They have to think about flight schedules, work duty assignments, uniforms, motion-sickness, and how and when they will eat their next meal.

It is during the holiday season that military families realize what they must sacrifice in order to serve their country. It is during the holiday season that military families really reflect about what they are going through. It is during the holiday season that military families come to depend on mail and modern technology for communication with their loved ones.

If you have ever had a loved one in the military you might have learned how to send a care package. And not just to your loved one. When you are in a military family you soon realize that a care package addressed to any soldier, sailor, etc. is extremely welcome. People in the military are always so happy to receive any kind of care package from any one “back home” in the States.

Not being home for the holidays touches the heart. It conjures up memories of Christmas’ past. Even receiving a paper-made ornament can help a loved one to feel close to family.  It is hard to think of Christmas when you’re in the middle of the desert. Having a picture of you will help your loved one to sleep better at night.

Yes, there are many military people who will not be home for the holidays. So, here are some ways to show them you care.

• Display a flag of the United States of America.

• Leave an empty chair and a place setting for them at the dinner table.

• Send a card, letter, gift or care package.

• Say a little prayer.

• Send lots of pictures!

Of course, one does not have to be in the military to “not” be home for the holidays. If you know of someone who won’t be joining you, think of some creative ways to show them you care. Think of some creative ways to bring a little bit of “home” to them.
