At its weekly meeting, Ossian Rotary will hear and see pictures from some of the 10 team members who recently returned from helping Kentucky flood victims in the Appalachian foothills.
The group was a combined team from First Baptist Church of Ossian and Ossian Rotary working to help Eastern Kentucky residents recover from devastating floods this past summer.
During late July, 2022, several thunderstorms brought historically record rainfall and deadly flash flooding to eastern Kentucky and central Appalachia, causing 39 deaths and catastrophic damage. Entire homes and communities were swept away. Over 600 helicopter rescues and countless boat evacuations were needed to save trapped residents dealing with the 14 to 16 inches of rain that fell.
Pastor Matthew Gullion, of the First Baptist Church of Ossian, grew up in the affected area and years later pastored for 14 years in what is now the most devastated area.
A mission/work team was formed at First Baptist Church of Ossian and members of Ossian Rotary were invited to come along, forming a team of ten men heading south to Kentucky, helping to restore as much of what was taken by the flood as possible.
“It was hard work…but it was good work,” said Ossian Rotary President Jeff Keplar. “One of Rotary’s goals is doing good in the world. What better way to accomplish that than what occurred during their week in Eastern Kentucky by the group from Ossian.”
The meeting will be held Thursday morning at 7:30 at Ossian Baptist Church, 1001 Dehner Drive in Ossian.
