Sometimes, I wish God didn’t invent time.
I know He created it for man’s good, but I’m too often tempted to abuse it to indulge the flesh — particularly when I believe someone else has not honored my time.
After all, I reasoned Thursday, I arrived at the restaurant about an hour before the 1 p.m. concert, giving the waiter plenty of time to serve me.
But I was still waiting for the bill at about 12:45 p.m., and I began to fear I would arrive late to worship God.
And then I realized: I could worship God right there in that restaurant booth. I could worship God simply by patiently and graciously thanking the waiter and treating him like a fellow image bearer of God; I could worship God by respecting his time.
Ultimately, no matter how much of “my” time the harried waiter sacrificed, I would not be late — if I saw with the eyes of the Savior, who put aside His desire to be alone with God to serve others instead (Matthew 14:13-21).
I hope, then, that the song this everyday moment inspired will help others embrace and pursue the everyday worship they might otherwise overlook, the everyday worship that I believe will inspire the lyrics to Heaven’s songs someday.
Verse 1:
We don’t always feel
Like singing a song
Sometimes we grow weary
With all the world’s wrongs
But we can still worship
And shine like the dawn
Though feelings may flicker
Our faith will grow strong
Chorus:
With everyday worship
That humbly obeys
That loves like Jesus
That shows the world grace
That glorifies God in the simplest of ways
With everyday worship that humbly obeys
Verse 2:
A tear for a sinner
A hug for a saint
A kind word of truth
For those tempted to stray
A patient reply
To the mocker who hates
From an old, opened Bible
To show them the way
Verse 3:
A prayer before supper
A smile for a frown
Each deed of devotion brings
God’s Kingdom down
So don’t take for granted
Each small seed of faith
For one day they’ll bloom with
A garden of grace
Chorus:
From everyday worship
That humbly obeys
That loves like Jesus
That shows the world grace
That glorifies God in the simplest of ways
With everyday worship that humbly obeys
