Bluffton boys’ XC places third, girls’ ninth at Oak Hill Invitational

 Both the Bluffton boys’ and girls’ cross country teams ran Saturday morning at the Oak Hill Invitational.

The boys’ team finished third of 12 schools, led by a fifth-place finish for Tyler Godwin at 17:36.5. Samuel Baumgartner at 18:08.2 (12th), Jude Baumgartner at 18:25.6 (17th), and Levi Johns 18:31.0 (19th) all finished in the top-20. The rest were Brett Kuhlenbeck (52nd), Ayden Teeple (78th), Jackson Rockwell (80th), Griffin Linderwell (84th), Manning Wutz (90th), Dalton Rodgers (108th), Owen Lesh (110th), and Elija Robles (117th).

The girls finished ninth of 11 schools, led by a 51st place finish for Dakota Lee at 25:19.9. Alydia Bertsch finished 66th with a 26:32.2, Amarah Robles finished 72nd at 27:26.8, Gabrielle VanCamp placed 75th at 27:55.2, and right behind her was Annika Linderwell in 76th at 27:55.7.

The next race for Bluffton will be 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Bi-County Conditioner at Bluffton.

Norwell boys’ XC places fifth, girls’ sixth in Taylor Invite

The Norwell co-ed cross country teams traveled to Upland, Indiana, to Taylor University for a Saturday morning invite.

The boys’ team finished fifth out of 14 schools.

Leading the way for the Knights was Zach Waldman in 15th at 17:03.7,  followed by Gavin Threewits in 54th at 18:27.1, Marin Melcher in 62nd at 18:41.1, and right behind him in 63rd was Bobby Kwandrans at 18:42.1. The rest were Lukas Mashuda (77th), Luke Johnson (91st), and Elijah Jacob (94th).

The girls’ team placed sixth out of 11 schools.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Brooklyn Meyer in 19th place, finishing at 20:59.9. In 24th was Makenzee Khan at 21:10.9. In 32nd was Ashley Waldman at 21:16.7, and 38th was Addison Meyer at 21:48.8. The rest of the runners for Norwell were Elizabeth Norris (44th), Hattie Lewis (52nd), Emerson Meredith (67th), Teagan Lesley (87th), Allison Shepherd (90th).

The next race for both teams will be the Bi-County Conditioner at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 at Bluffton.

Norwell girls’ soccer beat by Columbia City

The Norwell girls’ soccer team was in action Saturday morning to take on Columbia City. The team lost by just one goal, 2-1.

The lone goal for the Lady Knights’ was Karrigan Melcher.

The JV squad tied their game at 0-0, led by goaltender Abby Wagner who recorded a shutout.

The next game for both varsity and JV will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, starting with JV and varsity to follow at 6:30 p.m.

Blackhawk Christian takes out Norwell tennis

The Norwell Knights’ tennis team faced a tough Blackhawk Christian team on the road, losing 3-2. This was their first loss of the season.

In singles, the lone winner for Norwell was Grant Mishler, who won against Geno Rongos 6-2, 6-2. Ethan Ottinger lost to Rylan Doden 6-1, 6-2, and Bodie Zimmer lost to Ryan Bernard 6-2, 6-4.

Blackhawk and Norwell split the doubles matches, as the Knights’ Jaden Payne and Jake Hoover beat Kellen Pickett and Sam Donnelly 6-0, 4-6, 6-1. The Brave’s doubles victory came from Gage Sefton and Will Guthrie over Winston Frauhiger and Brason Chaney 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The Knights’ JV tennis team also lost a hard-fought battle 4-3. The winners for Norwell were Owen Cupp, Eddie Archbold and Ignacio ALbrecht, and Ethan Williamson and James Simmerman. Ethan Wilson, Brayden Wallace, Gavin Reynolds, Ayden Quintanilla, Alex Baker, and Christian Werling lost in their matches.

The Knights; will be back at home for the first time in three matches at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, against Carroll.
