I am writing in response to Mark Miller’s article, “To boldly go where this man has not gone before” from the July 9 edition.
I agree that abortion is a controversial subject. All one has to do is watch the news to see that played out on the streets. By the title of his column, Mark probably expected some debate. One has to be bold to even bring up the subject of abortion because emotions are so high whenever it is mentioned.
The abortion issue is certainly local. Although there is no abortion clinic in Blufffton, women here who choose to have an abortion must travel to another city for their procedure or abort at home with a pill.
I also agree with Mark that the U.S. Supreme Court was right to send the abortion issue back to the states to let the people decide our own policy.
I do not agree that abortion is more of a political issue rather than a moral issue. It is a life or death issue. That makes it a moral issue. The reason it becomes a political issue is because of the opposite platforms on abortion that the parties hold. I would encourage your readers to examine the party platforms themselves.
Mark quotes Dave Chappelle where he talks about a father’s choice in abortion. This reminded me of an incident I experienced in the ‘90s. I was outside the Fort Wayne abortion clinic where I was praying for women and offering them alternatives to abortion.
A young man had circled the block around the clinic several times. Then he stopped next to me, rolled down his window and frantically asked me if I’d seen his girlfriend as he thrusted her photo towards me. He said she was coming for an abortion and implored me to stop her and tell her that he would take the baby and raise him if she would just have the baby. I never saw the girl so I never knew the end of this story, but I never forgot this desperate young man. It really made me think about the father’s rights. Actually, he has none in this case.
I have no problem giving my state representatives guidance. I am firmly convinced that the unborn are human beings as each person reading this article was from the moment of your conception. Science proves it. I am asking my representative to vote for “The Life Bill,” House Bill 1282.
There will always be problem pregnancies, unexpected pregnancies, and unwanted pregnancies, but there are good solutions that don’t take the right to life from an innocent baby. Pregnancy centers exist to help parents through difficult life circumstances. Some of the worst situations can turn into life’s greatest blessings. The counsel and material aid pregnancy centers give are free, unlike the abortion business that profits from a woman’s crisis.
The General Assembly will reconvene on July 25 to address Indiana’s abortion laws. Now is the time to speak out for life. To find your legislators, go to http://iga.in.gov
