I made an afternoon out of being a tourist in Ossian last week.

Actually, I’ve been playing tourist for a few weeks now. I hope it inspires others to take a drive too. And let me tell you why.

News-Banner reporters have been hard at work interviewing and writing stories for this year’s Who We Are magazine, which comes out later this month.

This year I took on a new creative project at the encouragement of Mark Miller, who oversees the annual publication. I drove around Wells County looking for Little Free Libraries to capture for a photo essay. Some were on the organization’s official map and some were not. That made it all the more fun.

Without giving too much away before the magazine is even designed, edited and sent to the press, there is a special LFL in Ossian that I had to check out. I didn’t look at the map very well because I ended up in Archbold Wilson Memorial Park. It had been quite a while since I’ve been to that park, and it is gorgeous.

My son and I love checking out new playgrounds — although Roush and Whicker parks continue to be the favorites — and as soon as I saw the new playground at the park I thought, “We’re going to have to come here and play.”

Since I was in Ossian around lunch time, I decided to stop at Crimson House. It had been awhile since I had been there too and I wanted to try the avocado BLT with some coffee. The sandwich was delicious and so was my drink.

Then I thought, “There are a couple of books I want to check out that are at the Ossian Library, I better stop in there too.” So I did. I had already signed up for the summer reading program and I’m determined to make a dent in the overall goal this month.

In the end, Mark gave me a page and a half of the magazine to play around with after I compiled my photos. I was able to fit in 13 photos and captions for each, as well as a little write up about LFL.

When I took the assignment I didn’t expect to be a tourist in our community, but that’s exactly what happened.

I hope readers enjoy the listing of where to find Little Free Libraries in our community. I certainly enjoyed putting the project together.
