BHS boys’ golf falls to Vikings

Bluffton’s boys’ golf team came up just short at Huntington North on Tuesday, losing to the hosts 169-170. 

Bluffton’s Ephraim Frauhiger shot a 36 over Maple Grove’s front 9 to finish as medalist of the match. Frauhiger was followed on the Tigers by Keegan Schwartz at 39, Connor Klopfenstein at 47, Kade Abbett at 48, Draven Dull at 49, and Alec Reiff at 50. 

Huntington North was led by Austin Williams, who shot a 39. 

Bluffton lost in the JV match 200-227. 

Chase Gibson led the JV Tigers, shooting a 53. He was followed on the team by Kyler Potter at 57, Anthony Hartman at 58, Logan Shearrer at 59, Ethan Hunt at 63, and Logan Reifsteck at 64. 

Bluffton will take on Norwell in its next match on Thursday.

Bluffton softball loses late to Luers

Bluffton’s softball team came up just short in its first sectional game, losing 11-9 to Bishop Luers at Eastside. 

Bishop Luers took an early lead with four runs in the first, but the Tigers scored eight runs combined in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to lead 8-4. The Tigers (5-17) added one more in the top of the sixth to increase their lead to five. 

Bishop Luers bounced back in the bottom of the sixth though with seven runs and kept Bluffton scoreless in the seventh to win the game. 

The Tigers had seven hits at the plate. Lily King had two of them and drove in three runs. Madison Smith and Isabella Stout both added triples, and Averi Petty had a double and an RBI. 

Petty took the loss on the mound, pitching a complete game and allowing three earned runs while striking out nine. Bluffton’s defense finished with three errors while Bishop Luers played an error-free game. 

NHS softball moves on to championship

Norwell’s softball team advanced to the sectional championship with a win by forfeit over Marion. 

The Lady Knights will be met in the championship by the Bellmont Lady Braves, who defeated Mississinewa 10-4 in Tuesday’s other semifinal matchup. 

Norwell defeated Bellmont 13-9 when the two met in the regular season. 

SW boys’ golf team defeated at Northfield

Southern Wells’ boys’ golf team lost 177-208 at Northfield on Tuesday. 

James Foss led the Raiders, shooting a 45. He was followed on the team by Clay Smith and Bailey Couch each at 54, Archer Jones at 55, and Gabe McElhaney at 57. 

Northfield’s Easton Shaw shot a 39 to finish as medalist of the match. 

The Raiders tee off again Thursday at Delta. 

NHS tennis falls to Homestead at regional

Norwell’s girls’ tennis team lost 4-1 to Homestead in its first regional match at Carroll High School on Tuesday. 

The Lady Knights got their only point in No. 1 doubles where Mackinzie Toliver and Annabelle Johnson won 6-0, 6-4. The Norwell duo will move on in the tournament minus their team.

Aubreyan Heyerly lost No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2, McKenna McNabb lost No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2, and Addy Heyerly lost No. 3 singles 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. 

Jordyn Xayyachack and Sofia Fernandez lost No. 2 doubles 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. 

The match concluded Norwell’s season. The Knights finish the year with a 17-2 overall record, an NE8 Conference championship, and a sectional championship. Homestead handed Norwell its only regular season loss as well, which was by a 4-1 score. 

Green Valley Senior Golf

Lou Schroeder and George Thomas each had a low gross of 41, and Doug Scher had a low net of 29 at the Tuesday Senior Golf League at Green Valley Golf Course. 

Schroeder, George Thomas, Rich Borrer, and Greg Castalow were the winning team. 

Bruce Warner was closest to pin, Mike Bennett made the longest putt, and Rick Brodie had the least putts. 

Junior League Golf to begin in June

Junior League Golf at Green Valley Golf Course is set to kick off Monday, June 5 through Thursday, June 9 and Monday June 13 through Thursday June 16. 

Divisions include ages as young as 6-8 all the way to 15 and up. 

The cost per player to participate is $25. The fee includes lessons, contests, rules, prizes, playing on the golf course, and a tournament at the end of the week. 

Ages 6-8 start at 1 p.m., ages 9-10 begin at 1:45 p.m., Ages 11-12 begin at 2:30 p.m., Ages 13-14 begin at 3:15 p.m., and 15-and-up begins at 4 p.m.
