NHS softball tops Northrop

Norwell’s softball team won 12-0 at Northrop in five innings on Friday.

The Lady Knights (11-7) did not get their bats going until later in the game. Both the Knights and Bruins were scoreless in the first three innings. 

Norwell finally got on the board in the fourth inning, exploding for eight runs. It added four more in the fifth to win by the 10-run rule. 

Norwell had seven hits at the plate and also were able to take advantage of seven Northrop errors.

Sami Lemler and Allyson Burtron each had two hits and two runs scored. Burtron also drove in a run. 

Lemler was the winning pitcher, going all five innings and allowing just two hits. She also struck out two and walked three.

Norwell will host Columbia City in its next game on Monday.

Raider baseball splits DH with SA

The Southern Wells Raiders split a baseball doubleheader with South Adams on Friday, winning the first game 3-2 in eight innings and losing the second 12-1 in five innings. 

In the first game, Southern Wells (4-12) got on the board first in the third inning with a run, but the Starfires responded with two in the fourth to take the lead. 

The Raiders had one more shot in the seventh to get a run and got the one they needed to force extra innings. They took the lead in the eighth with another run and held on to win the game. 

Southern Wells had seven hits at the plate, with Branson Rheinhart coming up with three of them. He hit two triples and scored two runs. 

Kedrik Sonnigsen added a triple as well.

On the mound, Evan Reynolds pitched all eight innings and got the win. He allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out 10 and walking three. 

South Adams made up for its lack of runs in the first game by putting up 12 in the second game to win by the 10-run rule. The Starfires started with the only two runs they needed in the first, followed by one in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth, and four in the fifth. 

Southern Wells’ only run came in the second and was scored by Sonnigsen. The Raiders were held to just two hits as well, which came from Owen Vickrey and Wyatt Yoder. 

Vickrey was also the losing pitcher, allowing three runs on three hits in two innings while striking out two and walking three. 

The Raiders take the field again on Monday at home against Adams Central.

SW track teams lose to Woodlan

Southern Wells’ track and field teams both lost to Woodlan in a dual meet on Thursday. 

The Lady Raiders lost 108.5-13.5

Sydney McFarren placed first in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs for Norwell. She won the 1,600 with a time of 6:11 and the 3,200 with a time of 13:11. 

The Raiders lost in the boys’ meet 103-20. 

Joshua Bricker was Southern Wells’ lone event winner, taking first in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 11:08. 

Potter Garrett finished second in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:12. AJ Thompson was second in shot put with a throw of 37 feet 2 inches. Perrin Gates was second in discus with a throw of 106 feet 8 inches. 

Southern Wells’ will now head into sectional competition at Marion next week, with the girls’ meet taking place on Tuesday and the boys’ meet taking place on Thursday.

BHS softball falls at Southwood

Bluffton’s softball team fell at Southwood 11-4 on Friday. 

The Lady Tigers (2-14) were led at the plate by Cayah King, who hit a double and triple and drove in tow runs. Isabella Stout added a double and two stolen bases. 

Southwood did most of its damage early, leading 10-1 after three innings. The hosts were able to make Bluffton pay as well for committing seven errors on defense. 

Bluffton will return to action on Saturday with a home matchup against New Haven.

Norwell JV softball defeats Jay County

Norwell’s JV softball team beat Jay County 18-3 in Friday’s five-inning home game. 

The Lady Knights scored all the runs they needed to in the first inning, putting up six on the Patriots. They added four in the second, one in the third, and seven in the fourth to win by the 10-run rule. 

Norwell had 12 hits at the plate, with Haley Green’s bat leading the way. She went 2-for-3 with a home run and double, three runs, and five RBIs. Teagan Lesley had two hits, which were both triples, and Nevada Lenwell added two hits as well.

Kailey Eccles was the wining pitcher, allowing three runs and six hits in three innings while striking out one and walking two. Green and Addison Keller each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
