BERNE, Ind. — An 11-year-old Amish child has died from injuries suffered in a crash on Ind. 218 just east of Adams County Road 100E Friday afternoon.
Preliminary investigation by Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy James Franze shows that Aaron Michael Nelson, 24, of Muncie, was driving east on Ind. 218 just east of 100E shortly after 2 p.m.
Nelson told the deputy that he was traveling approximately 60 mph in a 55 zone and was looking down at his global positioning system. He said he did not see the Amish buggy, operated by Elizabeth Schwartz, 30, also traveling east bound on Ind. 218.
The van Nelson was driving slammed into the rear of the Schwartz buggy without braking. As a result from the impact all occupants from the buggy were ejected and landed along the south side of the roadway, and ditch area.
Schwartz and two of her children were transported by Adams County EMS to a Fort Wayne hospital, all suffering from head, facial injuries and internal injuries.
The 11-year-old was flown by Lutheran Air to Lutheran Hospital for treatment, but died later from the injuries sustained in the wreck.
The accident is still under investigation by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
Assisting the Adams County Sheriff’s Department at the scene were the Geneva Police Department, the Berne Fire Department, an accident reconstructionist from the Decatur Police Department, and the Indiana State Police.
