The cause of the Feb. 24 fire at the Capri Meadows II apartment complex is officially “undetermined” — at least for now.

Bluffton Fire Chief Don Craig said Thursday that he, along with a representative of the state fire marshal’s office and two insurance company investigators, went through the structure at 58 Capri Court this week and couldn’t find anything that would tell them what started the fire.

“We have no real cause,” Craig said. “Whatever caused it, it was burned up or not found.”

Some items from the fire scene were removed for laboratory investigation. It could be two to six weeks before those results are available, he said.

“At this time, the cause will be listed as undetermined, but it will remain under investigation,” he said.

The fire damaged the set of apartments on the east side of the Capri Meadows II complex and chased approximately 40 people out of their apartments. Craig said last week that engineers for a company hired to work at the site told him the apartments would be repaired, not rebuilt — something Craig said he considered a “win” for the firefighters who responded to the blaze.

Ten area fire departments responded to the afternoon fire to assist the Bluffton Fire Department in extinguishing it. There were four injuries, one to a first responder and three to residents.
